Do You Need to Ditch the Gym to Find Wellbeing?

Full disclosure: I use a gym myself. I like the structure, the equipment, and the occasional blast of music that makes a heavy set feel a bit lighter. But despite this, I totally understand why more and more people are stepping away from the traditional gym setting in their pursuit of genuine wellbeing. And I believe there's a better way for many people—one that fits real life, not the version of it that exists only between gym walls.
The Myth of the Gym
For years, gyms have been marketed as the only place where “serious” fitness happens. Treadmills, resistance machines, and spin classes have become the symbols of getting in shape. But the truth is, many people walk into gyms feeling intimidated, unsure, or simply out of place. It’s not always a welcoming environment—especially if you’re juggling a full-on work schedule, family responsibilities, or if you’ve had an on-off relationship with fitness for a while.
So it’s no surprise that a growing number of people are stepping back and asking: Does wellbeing really have to happen in a gym?
The answer is a loud and confident no.
What True Wellbeing Looks Like
True wellbeing isn’t built on treadmills. It’s not measured in how many machines you’ve used or how many reps you’ve logged. It’s built through consistency, joy, and habits that feel manageable and meaningful—the kind that slot into your everyday life rather than disrupting it.
You’ll find the healthiest people doing things like:
Walking daily because it clears their head.
Carrying shopping bags home as a form of strength work.
Stretching while watching telly in the evening.
Getting outside, breathing fresh air, and moving in ways that feel good.
The healthiest people often aren’t the ones smashing out gym sessions six times a week—they’re the ones who move regularly, sleep well, eat food they enjoy and trust their routine enough to stick with it for the long haul.
Coaching Outside the Gym
This is exactly where one-to-one coaching with me comes in.
You don’t need to be locked into a gym contract or squeeze a workout into the small window between commuting and cooking dinner. With me, you get a flexible, realistic approach that’s completely tailored to you.
Whether it’s training at home with a few dumbbells, using a nearby park, or doing short, focused sessions in between Zoom calls, I build fitness into your lifestyle—not the other way around.
Here’s What You Get With Me Outside the Gym:
A plan that works around your time – whether that’s early mornings, school runs, or your lunch break.
Support to build habits that last beyond the “new year, new me” buzz.
Coaching on your terms – without the crowds, waiting for equipment, or needing to feel like you have to “look the part”.
Guidance on strength, mobility, and conditioning, using minimal kit but maximum efficiency.
The Bottom Line
Wellbeing isn’t something you find by clocking in at the gym three times a week and hoping for the best. It’s something you build, piece by piece, day by day—with movement that makes sense, in an environment that feels right for you.
So if the gym's not working for you, you may just need a need, a new approach. That’s where I come in.
Let’s find your version of healthy, one session at a time.
