"Your health is what you make of it. Everything you do and think either adds to the vitality, energy, and spirit or takes away from it."— Ann Wigmore
I came across this quote recently, and it really resonated with me because it sums up exactly what I try to help my clients understand every day.
When people think about improving their health, they often imagine they need to make huge changes overnight. They think they need to spend hours in the gym, follow a strict diet, or completely turn their life upside down.
The reality is very different.
Our health isn't built on one workout, one healthy meal, or one good night's sleep. It's built through the choices we make every single day. Some of those choices move us forwards, while others move us backwards. The good news is that every day gives us another opportunity to make a positive choice.
Health Isn't About Being Perfect
One of the biggest misconceptions about fitness is that you have to be perfect.
You don't.
Life gets busy. Work becomes demanding. Family commitments take priority. Holidays happen. We all have days when motivation is low, and that's completely normal.
What matters is what you do most of the time.
A takeaway on a Friday evening doesn't undo a week of healthy eating, just as missing one workout doesn't erase all the progress you've made. It's consistency that makes the difference, not perfection.
That's something I remind my clients of regularly. The goal isn't to be perfect; it's to keep moving forwards.
Every Choice Counts
I often encourage people to think of their health like a bank account.
Every positive decision is a deposit.
Going for a walk.
Preparing a healthy lunch.
Drinking enough water.
Getting to bed a little earlier.
Strength training.
Taking a few minutes to stretch after a long day.
Managing stress before it builds up.
These may seem like small things, but together they add up over time.
Of course, there are withdrawals too.
Too little movement. Poor sleep. Highly processed food day after day. Constant stress. Sitting for long periods without a break.
None of these things on their own define your health, but when they become habits, they begin to have an impact.
The encouraging part is that every positive choice, no matter how small, is another step in the right direction.
Your Mindset Shapes Your Health Too
One part of Ann Wigmore's quote that often gets overlooked is the phrase, "Everything you do and think..."
Our thoughts matter.
I've met many people who tell themselves they're too old to start exercising, that they've left it too late, or that they've never been the sporty type.
The problem is that once we believe those things, they often become excuses that stop us taking the first step.
I prefer to encourage a different mindset.
Start where you are.
Do what you can.
Build from there.
You don't need to compare yourself with anyone else. Your journey is your own, and every positive step deserves recognition.
Confidence grows through action, not before it.
Exercise Is About Living Better
People often assume exercise is all about losing weight or changing how they look.
Whilst those things may happen, they're rarely the biggest rewards.
Exercise helps you climb the stairs without becoming breathless.
It helps you carry shopping more easily.
It helps you play with your children or grandchildren.
It improves your balance, your posture, your mobility and your confidence.
Strength training helps protect your muscles and bones as you get older, making everyday life easier and helping you stay independent for longer.
To me, that's far more important than chasing a number on the scales.
Small Changes Create Big Results
One of the things I enjoy most about working with clients is seeing how small improvements begin to transform their lives.
Someone starts walking for twenty minutes a few times each week.
Another begins strength training twice a week.
Someone else improves their sleep by simply switching off their phone a little earlier each evening.
None of these changes seem dramatic on their own.
But six months later, they have more energy, they're stronger, they move better, and they feel more confident.
That's the power of consistency.
My Approach at Andrew K Personal Training
At Andrew K Personal Training, I don't believe in quick fixes or unrealistic promises.
My role isn't simply to count repetitions or put people through exhausting workouts.
It's to help people build healthier habits that fit into their everyday lives.
Whether your goal is to lose weight, improve your fitness, become stronger, manage a health condition, or simply feel better in yourself, we work together to create a plan that's realistic and sustainable.
Every programme is tailored to the individual because everyone's starting point, goals and lifestyle are different.
My aim is to give you the confidence, knowledge and support to make exercise part of your life—not just for a few weeks, but for years to come.
One Decision Can Change Your Direction
It's easy to underestimate the importance of today's choices because their impact isn't always immediate.
But today's walk could become tomorrow's habit.
Today's workout could be the beginning of a stronger body.
Today's healthy meal could lead to a healthier lifestyle.
Today's positive thought could be the reason you don't give up.
Every decision has the potential to move you closer to the healthier future you want.
As Ann Wigmore so wisely said, "Your health is what you make of it."
I couldn't agree more.
Every choice you make either adds to your vitality, your energy and your wellbeing, or it takes something away.
You don't have to change everything today.
Just start with one positive decision.
Then another.
And another.
Before long, those small choices become lasting habits, and those habits become the healthier, stronger, more confident version of you.
Because your future health isn't decided by chance.
It's created by the choices you make today.
